MinuteMoments: Match Over Masala Dosa and Matar Kulcha

When Rinky didi turned twenty six, everyone from Gupta Uncle till Sweety Aunty started babbling about her marriage. Ranging from hot-shot engineers to money-minting bankers, people suggested all kind of grooms for her. Reena "Rinky" Mathur's wedding had become the hot topic in Roopnaveli Society. She was pretty, young and an intelligent woman coming from a fairly well-to-do family.
'They will shower the groom's family' chattered the Aunties of the society. It almost looked like they had a better record of Mr Mathur's money than he himself. At first, Rinky was fascinated by the idea of getting married and looked forward to every meeting. However, constant reminders and visits to the opposite party made her sick. She had met a variety of men; from sloppy to extra squeamish. A handful of them were very cheesy as well.
'How would you like your eggs, poached or scrambled?' asked Suresh in a lewd manner while he chewed kebabs in an undignified manner. He was one of the creeps with handsome packages. After that, Rinky became apprehensive on meeting any men at all. But one day, something abrupt happened. Minty masi  crashed their house early in the morning brimming with news.
'Kitty!' she excitedly call out Mrs Mathur name. Everyone in the building was now aware that Minty masi had entered the premises. Her shrieky voice could even get the dead out of sleep.
'What happened?' asked Mrs Mathur, apparently in less enthused voice.
'I have found the perfect match for Rinky' she exclaimed. This was the fifth time in six months she had said that and till now, each of her grooms were just fine.
'He lives in London, is broad minded and doesn't mind her working' and she went on with the complete bio-data. Rinky's parents, as hopeful before every meeting were reluctant about this one as Rinky had too much of it already.
'Minty, lets leave it for today. She is really not-' started Mrs Mathur
'Kitty, he is leaving for London today, I convinced his mother to meet her what else could you possibly want!' ranted Minty masi.
Rinky heard the entire conversation in silence. She didn't want to go but creating drama wasn't one of her strengths. She agreed on only one condition: no boys after this one.

The entire family reached the South Extension Haldiram's, a family eating joint. Rinky was accompanied with her family and Minty masi. They waited for the boy to come when suddenly a clan of almost twenty people entered the premises. Each one of them was dressed in gaudy traditional attire. 'Is that them?' Rinky asked in disbelief. The amount of shimmer in their clothes seemed to blind everyone in the restaurant.
'Yes!' giggled Minty masi, her eyes glistened with happiness.
There were so many people that spotting one guy was becoming an Herculean task. Finally, the boy's mother made her cut and reached Rinky and her family. She was a peculiar looking woman; her face was smaller than her body. Her body was big enough to fit two DTC buses. By looking at her appearance, Rinky concocted her son. She felt like running away from the place already.
'Hello ji!' she said in typical behanji accent and hugged Mr and Mrs Mathur. 'myself Pushpa Puri, mother of Sahir Puri' she introduced herself. Rinky was resenting her decision to come. She even doubted if the boy was doing any good job in London. In fact, she doubted even he lived in London.
'Chottu is coming. Oh, there he is!' she said.
From a distant corner emerged a man, Rinky couldn't believe her eyes; he had streaked hair; a mixture brown and black. His eyes were captivating and complemented his sharp features. Dressed in black pants and suit, he fitted into Rinky's most desirable range. Suddenly, her eyes shifted to a slightly shorter, oddly looking man who was standing just beside Mrs Puri. 'I am Sahir' he said, not too cheerfully. Apparently, he saw Rinky noticing the pretty man. 'I am Reena' she said, her face had turned red from embarrassment.
'Oho! See how she's blushing to see my Chottu' spoke Mrs Puri. What do fat mothers get by flattering their average sons? thought Reena. 'Lets give them space' spoke Reena's father. All the immediate members left immediately, leaving the two only.
'Let me guess, your Aunt forced you?' scowled Sahir.
'No, I came myself'' Reena defended, of course Minty masi forced but she couldn't say that.
'Well, you're clearly not interested in me when you've seen that pretty man'
'I'm sorry, I wasn't given a photo'
'So you judge people by their face?' he asked, his question pinched Reena.
'As if you don't check out pretty girls in London'
'Actually, I don't'
'Explains why you're single'. His expression slightly changed and she could see him forge a smile.
'Tell me about yourself' he finally spoke. Reena gave him necessary details, like a job applicant. He told about his life in the same manner. One of his family member, came and served us food. Sahir had Masala Dosa and Rinky had ordered Matar Kulcha.'A Punjabi boy ordering South-Indian food is as uncommon as no traffic in Delhi' Reena commented.
'You stereotype food as well? Jesus you're a judgemental woman' he sighed.
'No, all I am trying to say that we are totally different people'
'Exactly, why should we even think as if we'll hit off'
'True, but we can't leave the food' Reena smirked as she enjoyed her plate of Matar Kulcha.
'So, are you a virgin?' Sahir said, he didn't mean in bad sense, in fact his voice content. Reena thought about it, she was smarter than people thought.
'No' she answered.
'Good, nor am I' he replied
'You're not!' Reena exclaimed in a slightly higher tone.
'Why are your surprised? Just because I don't look good and a little fat?'
'A little is an understatement' she said in undertone, though he wasn't that fat. At least not as his family, maybe the Dosa's kept him thin.
'Wait, you are a virgin. That's why you were shocked'. Reena didn't hesitate and just looked away.
As moments passed by they both had eye contacts. Reena thought about it too much, she started speaking about her only relationship. It had happened long time ago and it was bad, pretty bad.
She spoke to a massive length and Sahir just stood and listened to her. When she finished, he gazed at her for a few moments. 'Why are you telling me this?' he asked. 'I don't know' she answered. She never spoke about it to anyone, she was thinking of Sahir being special already. When he had the last bite of his Dosa he said, 'Do you want to catch up with a drink?'
'Don't you have a flight?'
'I can miss it'. Reena's eyes glowed, she saw Sahir differently. He was a friend, sort of.
'Plus we need a little less people, my mother as you can see....err is embarrassing at times'. Reena laughed and they slipped outside.
'Me too by the way' he said. 'What?' she asked but realised it before he could answer.

6  months later...
'Where the hell are you?'Reena screamed, she was hyperventilating. The wedding was in  twelve hour's time and the groom was missing.
'Remember you told me about the guy who broke your heart the first time we met?'
'Yes' she said skeptically.
'You don't know where I kicked him' Sahir laughed and spoke.
